tRippo's Story:
Rippo is a Robot Rhinoceros inspired wooden storage box - both an artistic piece and a practical. Being one of the first pieces I created for the Monstabox Series meant a lot of learning to find the right techniques and processes to build them. The Monstabox Series was created so kids could have a cool little friend who keeps their special things safe inside.
Rippo is designed with geometrical shapes to give it that robotic look. It possesses two powerful, top corner fangs and sports a great horn, racing ears and four little feet. Rippo has a natural/wild finish and hammered in studs to give it a constructed style.
Creating Rippo
I created Rippo in my workshop in Auckland, starting with a 3D digital illustration. I then breakdown the box into parts and draw the parts up as a precision CAD file. The CAD file is sent to the CNC program where I make the cut files for the artwork. From the cut files I generate the g-code or CNC cutting code ready for the cutting process. The plywood is loaded on the CNC machine and the pieces are cut out using the g-code. The pieces are then inspected, sanded, assembled, sanded again and finally varnished.
As you can see there are many processes involved its creation and much of it is handcrafted making it a truly special and bespoke item.
