The Grand Stag's Story:
In Celtic folklore the Deer Stag is a noble beast that has been inspiring Celtic thought for thousands of years. Some cave paintings in the European continent show deer dating from as early as 40,000 years ago. In Celtic myth and religion, the stag personifies the power of the Other World (realm of the dead and/or the Gods), the forest and untamed nature generally.
In this interpretation the Grand Stag is highly stylised, standing tall and optimistically peering skyward from within the Deers Den. It has slender legs and is crowned with tree-like antlers. Its body is marked with energy lines originating from a spiral tuft of hair on its nape.
The Red Deer
The Deer is powerful, agile and sexually vigorous. Its antlers, which resemble the branches of a tree, are an emblem of the regenerative and cyclical pattern of nature — they grow throughout the summer, are used in the rutting duels, and drop off in the winter only to grow again next spring. The antlers also remind us that nature can be dangerous and violent, or benign. Folklore of the Insular Celts includes stories of supernatural deer and spirits or deities who can take deer form.
The Den
A Den was sometimes used as a site of pagan worship, sometimes haunted by fairies and steeped in Celtic legend that still attracts pilgrims today. Usually located in the wooded area, the den has a mystical, supernatural atmosphere. Some of these pre-Christian holy sites consisted of large crags and wells laying in clearings in the woods. It is rumoured that certain crags with wells were used as altars for human sacrifice by ancient druids. However, there is no record of Druids taking part in such practices and it is more likely that the well was marvelled as a natural wonder. A footprint carved into the rock next to the well at Dunino Den gives us an insight into the importance of the site. Carved footprints were used during inauguration rituals, such as the anointing of kings and chieftains, suggesting that ancient kings were likely to have been crowned there.
Creating the Grand Stag
I created the design in Auckland, starting with a digital illustration, then bring the illustration into my CNC Program where I make a 2.5D model of the artwork. From the model I generate the g-code or CNC cutting code ready for the carving process. The material is loaded on the CNC machine and the piece is carved over a few hours. The carved art piece is then inspected, sanded, sealed, sanded again, painted, varnished and finally a hanging wire installed.
As you can see to create this sculpted piece there are many processes involved making it a truly special and bespoke item.
