The Two Headed Taniwha Story:
This Taniwha is two headed, symbolizing strength and protection and the union of the North and South Island of New Zealand. As a guardian of the eyes are large and wide open - ever watchful. The hands and feet clutch its body reinforcing its staunch, semi-coiled body. The Two Headed Taniwha is coloured with green and metallic gold borrowed from the New Zealand native Harakere (flax). The skin is emblazoned with protruding kupenga (woven) scales in a fishing net style.
Taniwha
There are many types of Taniwha and they are usually associated with a body of water. They can be a water spirit or monster, a dangerous and powerful water creature, a powerful chief or leader, something or someone awesome. Taniwha take many forms from logs to reptiles and whales and often live in lakes, rivers or the sea. They are similar to the Dragons of Celtic origin. They are often regarded as guardians by the people who live in their territory, but may also have a malign influence on human beings. They represent the life force (mauri) of a place in physical form and were constantly seen in the presence of waterways, protecting fish and other resources.
Creating the Two Headed Taniwha
I created the design in Auckland, starting with a digital illustration, then bring the illustration into my CNC Program where I make a 2.5D model of the artwork. From the model I generate the g-code or CNC cutting code ready for the carving process. The material is loaded on the CNC machine and the piece is carved over a few hours. The carved art piece is then inspected, sanded, sealed, sanded again, painted, varnished and finally a hanging wire installed.
As you can see to create this sculpted piece there are many processes involved making it a truly special and bespoke item.
