The Anubis Story:
Anubis is the Egyptian jackal-headed deity who ruled the Egyptian afterworld. When kings were being judged by Osiris, Anubis placed their hearts on one side of a scale and a feather on the other. The results indicated whether the king could enter the afterworld.
This is a stylised front bust of Anubis, it shows a hint of a pharaoh's headpiece on either side of his head and an elongated orb representing the "Eye of the Mind" or in another form the "Eye of Horus" which in Egyptian beliefs had mystic powers. Anubis is coloured black with a royal blue tint and highlighted with metallic gold, blue and gold being ingrained in early Egyptian culture.
Creating Anubis
I created Anubis in Auckland, starting with a digital illustration. The illustration drawn for Anubis used a new depth map gray scale technique which when imported to my CNC Program, the drawing itself could generate the 2.5D model by treating the black and white values as lower and higher points. From the model I generate the g-code or CNC cutting code ready for the carving process. The material is loaded on the CNC machine and the piece is carved over a few hours. The carved art piece is then inspected, sanded, sealed, sanded again, painted, varnished and finally a hanging wire installed.
As you can see to create this sculpted piece there are many processes involved making it a truly special and bespoke item.
