The Great White Story:
The Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias), also known as the white shark, white pointer, or simply great white, is a species of large mackerel shark which can be found in the coastal surface waters of all the major oceans. The Great White Shark is an apex predator, as it has no known natural predators other than, on very rare occasions, the orca. It is responsible for more recorded human bite incidents than any other shark.
In this Great White's side profile was created by laying out a series of parallel vertical line cuts and using a break in the lines to demarcate the outline of the Shark in the negative space - the side profile being the most recognisable angle. Other distinctive features were pocket cut in the positive, similar to the vertical line cuts to create the contrast in the material. Painted fully white in tribute to the shark's name.
Creating The Great White
I created the Great White in Auckland, starting with a digital illustration, then bring the illustration into my CNC Program where I draw up the precision linework for cutting. From the line work I generate the g-code or CNC cutting code ready for the cutting process. The material is loaded on the CNC machine and the piece is cut in around an hour. The art piece is then inspected, sanded, sealed, sanded again, painted, varnished and finally a hanging wire installed.
As you can see to create this sculpted piece there are many processes involved making it a truly special and bespoke item.
