The Nouveau Sun Story:
The Nouveau Sun is part of the Sun Series and is inspired by Art Nouveau design.
The Nouveau Sun features a feminine formed face at its centre with radiating floral rays. The Nouveau Sun has minimal earthy colours & black stained carved lines on a stained wood background.
Art Nouveau
Art Nouveau, is an international style of art, architecture, and applied art, especially the decorative arts. It was popular between 1890 and 1910 and was often inspired by natural forms such as the sinuous curves of plants and flowers. Other characteristics of Art Nouveau were a sense of dynamism and movement, often given by asymmetry or whiplash lines, and the use of modern materials, particularly iron, glass, ceramics and later concrete, to create unusual forms and larger open spaces.
The Sun
The Sun, as the source of energy and light for life on Earth, has been a central object in culture and religion since prehistory. Ritual solar worship has given rise to solar deities in theistic traditions throughout the world. Apart from its immediate connection to light and warmth, the Sun is also important in timekeeping as the main indicator of the day and the year.
The earliest understanding of the Sun was that of a disk in the sky, whose presence above the horizon creates day and whose absence causes night. In the Bronze Age, this understanding was modified by assuming that the Sun is transported across the sky in a boat or a chariot, and transported back to the place of sunrise during the night after passing through the underworld.
Many ancient monuments were constructed with the passing of the solar year in mind; for example, stone megaliths accurately mark the summer or winter solstice.
Creating the Nouveau Sun
I created the nouveau Sun design in Auckland, starting with a digital illustration, then bringing the illustration into my CNC Program where I design the cutting paths. From the paths I generate the g-code or CNC cutting code ready for the carving process. The material is loaded on the CNC machine and the piece is carved in around an hour. The carved art piece is then inspected, sanded, coloured, varnished and finally a hanging wire installed.
As you can see to create this sculpted piece there are many processes involved making it a truly special and bespoke item.
