The Mayan Sun Story:
The Mayan Sun is part of the Sun Series and is inspired by ancient Mayan megalithic motifs and Sun Deity worship during that time period.
The Mayan Sun features twelve geometrically styled arms radiating from a sun disc with a Mayan face at its centre. The sun is coloured bright red, orange and yellow and sits on a wood stained background.
The Sun in Mayan Culture
The sun was very important in the Mayan culture. The Mayan sun god was Kinich Ahau, one of the Mayan creator gods. Kinich Ahau would shine in the sky all day before being believed to transform himself into a jaguar at night to pass through Xibalba, the Mayan underworld. The Maya were aware of the solstices and equinoxes. This is demonstrated in building alignments. More important to them were zenithal passage days. In the Tropics the Sun passes directly overhead twice each year. Many known structures in Mayan temples were built to observe this.
Creating the Mayan Sun
I created the Mayan Sun design in Auckland, starting with a digital illustration, then bringing the illustration into my CNC Program where I design the cutting paths. From the paths I generate the g-code or CNC cutting code ready for the carving process. The material is loaded on the CNC machine and the piece is carved in around an hour. The carved art piece is then inspected, sanded, coloured, varnished and finally a hanging wire installed.
As you can see to create this sculpted piece there are many processes involved making it a truly special and bespoke item.
