The Sparmoan Helmet Story:
The Sparmoan Helmet is a combination of two themes - 1. A Greek Spartan Warrior's Helmet and 2. Samoan Design.
The Sparmoan Helmet takes a classic Greek Spartan Warrior's Helmet and is decorated with traditional Samoan design. The piece is brightly coloured on a stained wood background and sits upon a slashed sun disc.
The Spartans
Sparta was unique in ancient Greece for its social system and constitution, which were supposedly introduced by the semi-mythical legislator Lycurgus. His laws configured the Spartan society to maximize military proficiency at all costs, focusing all social institutions on military training and physical development. Spartiate men underwent the rigorous agoge training regimen, and Spartan phalanx brigades were widely considered to be among the best in battle. Spartan women enjoyed considerably more rights than elsewhere in classical antiquity.
Samoan Design
In Samoan artwork and design there is history with deep meaning behind them. The tattoo and designs of the Samoa represents community, power, status, respect, honor, and is a mark of pride that are only to be worn by Samoans. For those who have no cultural influence or heritage background it is an act of disrespect to display their symbols and designs.
Creating the Sparmoan Helmet
I created the Sparmoan Helmet design in Auckland, starting with a digital illustration, then bringing the illustration into my CNC Program where I design the cutting paths. From the paths I generate the g-code or CNC cutting code ready for the carving process. The material is loaded on the CNC machine and the piece is carved in around an hour. The carved art piece is then inspected, sanded, coloured, varnished and finally a hanging wire installed.
As you can see to create this sculpted piece there are many processes involved making it a truly special and bespoke item.
