The Santiki Story:
The Santiki's name is a combination of Santa and Tiki. This Tiki wears a Santa Hat. Santiki has an enlarged head and small body, his arms come together over his heart and his legs stand firm in a squatting position. He performs the pukana - staring with wide eyes and sticking out his tongue. He is decorated with simple moko lines and spirals. The background linework and frame are a continuation of the patterns on the Santiki.
The Tiki
In Māori mythology, Tiki is the first man created by either Tūmatauenga or Tāne. He found the first woman, Marikoriko, in a pond; she seduced him and he became the father of Hine-kau-ataata. By extension, a tiki is a large or small wooden, pounamu or stone carving in humanoid form, notably worn on the neck as a hei-tiki, although this is a somewhat archaic usage in the Māori language. Hei-tiki are often considered taonga, especially if they are older and have been passed down throughout multiple generations. Carvings similar to ngā tiki and coming to represent deified ancestors are found in most Polynesian cultures. They often serve to mark the boundaries of sacred or significant sites.
Santa
Santa Claus, also known as Father Christmas, Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Kris Kringle, or simply Santa, is a legendary character originating in Western Christian culture who is said to bring children gifts during the late evening and overnight hours on Christmas Eve of toys and candy or coal or nothing, depending on whether they are "naughty or nice". He supposedly accomplishes this with the aid of Christmas elves, who make the toys in his workshop, often said to be at the North Pole, and flying reindeer who pull his sleigh through the air.
Creating Santiki
I created the Santiki design in Auckland, starting with a digital illustration, then bringing the illustration into my CNC Program where I make a 2.5D model of the artwork. From the model I generate the g-code or CNC cutting code ready for the carving process. The material is loaded on the CNC machine and the piece is carved over a few hours. The carved art piece is then inspected, sanded, sealed, sanded again, painted, varnished and finally a hanging wire installed.
As you can see to create this sculpted piece there are many processes involved making it a truly special and bespoke item.
