The Ra - Rua Story:
Ra - Rua is part of the Ra Series of artworks.
Ra is a Solar Diety, he was known under this name almost everywhere in Polynesia. Ra - Rua uses Maori Moko lines in a black wood stain to depict the face of the sun disc with pointed Niho Niho (Shark's Teeth) around its outside. Ra - Rua sits on a wood stained background.
Ra
The personal name of the sun, Tama-nui-te-ra, was a common usage in former days, and is still in use. Kau was a name for the sun in Egypt; among the Maori the word was used in a curious way connected with the movements of the heavenly bodies. Ra, the old Egyptian name for the sun, was also its ordinary appellation in Maoriland. In that old land the sun was the principal deity, and had many manifestations. Thus the setting sun was known as Ra-tum, and by a singular coincidence the expression ra tumu means “the setting sun” in eastern Polynesia. On Samoa, the sun is Lā and on Tahiti, Ra'a. In Tongan the sun is La'a; and in Polynesia generally, at death, or the transferance of a king's temporal power, it is said "The Rā has set," the king being called "the man who holds the sun," or "the sun-eater." As the "eye of day" the sun is alluded to. In Mangaia the sun god Rā sinks every night to his home in Avaiki (Hawaiki), the netherworld.
Creating Ra
I created Ra in Auckland, starting with a digital illustration, then bringing the illustration into my CNC Program where I design the cutting paths. From the paths I generate the g-code or CNC cutting code ready for the carving process. The material is loaded on the CNC machine and the piece is carved in around an hour. The carved art piece is then inspected, sanded, coloured, varnished and finally a hanging wire installed.
As you can see to create this sculpted piece there are many processes involved making it a truly special and bespoke item.
Packaging:
The item will be packaged with bubble wrapping inside a cardboard outer box.
Delivery:
The item will be couriered to your chosen destination. Courier and Shipping times TBC
