The Luba Mask Story:
Luba Mask is part of the Mask Series.
The Luba Mask is an African inspired design based on the mask art of the Luba Culture in Zaire. Featuring large bewildering eyes in a circular face and patterned with flowing lines, bright colours with black stained linework and a wood stained background.
Luba Mask
Striated face masks known as kifwebe was historically created by sculptors in an area of the Zaire River Basin inhabited by both Songye and Luba communities. Significant departures in the role and formal interpretation of this sculptural genre subsequently developed in each culture. In both instances, Kifwebe masks participated in initiations and played a role in establishing order in society. Round striated Luba kifwebe function within benevolent practices that purify the community of the evil spirits of sorcerers. In performance, this mask was complemented by a costume ensemble comprising woven textiles, animal pelts, and plant fibers, which covered the dancer’s body.
Creating the Luba Mask
I created the Luba Mask design in Auckland, starting with a digital illustration, then bringing the illustration into my CNC Program where I design the cutting paths. From the paths I generate the g-code or CNC cutting code ready for the carving process. The material is loaded on the CNC machine and the piece is carved in around an hour. The carved art piece is then inspected, sanded, coloured, varnished and finally a hanging wire installed.
As you can see to create this sculpted piece there are many processes involved making it a truly special and bespoke item.
